Ethiopia’s Information and Facts: Ethiopia has approximately 4.7 million orphans and that is on the rise. This is about 7 % of the entire population. Nearly 2/3rds of children that are school age are not in school. Only 43% of Ethiopians can read and write. The average lifespan from birth is around 50 years old. Just over 80 % of Ethiopia’s people live on less than $2.00 a day and just over 25% live on less than $1.00 a day. This is a sign of complete and utter poverty. The average African nations have a budget of approximately $10.00 year per person for Health Care Expenses (which is well below where it should be). Ethiopia spends approximately $2.00 per person on Health Care Expenses per year. Seventy five percent of the Ethiopian people lack clean water. The UN Human Poverty Index evaluated 103 Nations and Ethiopia ranked in at 99 (2005). One in Six children do not live past the age of five. Diarrhea kills 250,000 children a year.
